Pronouns are one of the many ways we express gender and identity. Everyone has pronouns, including cisgender people! Knowing and sharing your own pronouns makes space for everyone else to do so too. It's important to ASK, NOT ASSUME other peoples' pronouns.

When you're learning a new set of pronouns you haven't used before or switching to a new set of pronouns for someone you already know, its normal to feel a bit awkward at first - it just takes practice! You can always practice with a friend or out loud by yourself.

If you accidentally misgender someone by using the wrong pronouns, correct yourself and move on - drawn-out apologies or explanations can make it a bigger deal than it needs to be and can be exhausting for the person who is misgendered. If you catch your own mistake, just switch pronouns and keep going. If another person corrects you, just say a simple "Thanks" or "I'm sorry, thanks for correcting me" and continue with the conversation.

Some common pronouns and examples of how they're used: 

He/Him/His/Himself - "He enjoys working in his garden all by himself."

She/Her/Hers/Herself - "She loves to rock climb. That helmet is hers."

They/Them/Their/Theirs/Themselves (singular) - "They aced that exam! All their hard work paid off."

Ze/Hir/Hirs/Hirself - "Ze is such a great friend. I don't know what I would do without hir support." [pronounced "Zee" and "Hear"]

Ze/Zir/Zirs/Zirself - "Ze is the funniest person I've ever met. That joke I told you was zirs." [pronounced "Zee" and "Zeers"]

Fae/Faer/Faers/Faerself - "That book is faers - fae wrote it faerself." [pronounced "Fairs", "Fay," and "Fairself"]

Ey/Em/Eir/Eirs/Emself - "Ey is going fishing and eir dog is going with em." [pronounced "Ey" as in hey, "Air," and "Em"]
