Your resume or curriculum vitae (CV) is an indispensable personal marketing tool, an accurate summary of your abilities, education, and experiences. It should highlight your strongest skills so as to differentiate you from other candidates and should work to be self-promotional.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE? Resumes and CVs both provide an overview of professional and educational experience. The difference between the two primarily lies in content, purpose, and length.

  • Resume - Generally about 1 - 2 page in length, highlighting your experiences and is tailored to the position you are seeking.
  • CV - More appropriate for students applying to graduate school or teaching and research positions, and often is a much more comprehensive document that includes stronger emphasis on academic and research experience. Note:  In some countries, the term "CV" refers to a brief, resume-like document of one to two pages in length, not the academic CV described here.
