Housing Accommodations

Housing Accessibility, ESA, and Meal Plan Accommodations

Housing Accessibility Accommodations (ESAs, Medical Accommodations and Meal Plan Accommodations)

Warren Wilson College is committed to providing equal access to its programs, activities and services as covered under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504), and the Americans with Disabilities Act and Amendments Act of 2008 (ADA). The College recognizes the importance of providing reasonable accommodations (in academic, social, and residence life) to facilitate students full access to its housing policies and practices when necessary for students with disabilities.

The Housing Accommodations process is designed to work with individuals who qualify under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

Communal and Residence Life at Warren Wilson College

Community Life at WWC : Communal engagement at WWC includes, living in residence halls, eating in the cafeteria, class attendance and participation, and participation in our outside community partners in the Community Engagement program.

Residential Life at WWC: Living in residence halls, where students live in a community and share space with others, is considered to be an integral part of the Warren Wilson College educational experience.

Standard Residence Hall Housing: A standard housing assignment is a two-person room (double occupancy) with communal bathroom facilities. Not all residence halls have elevator access or air conditioning. Most residence halls have communal kitchens and common/living room spaces.

Housing Accommodations

Students with disabilities are provided accommodations through an individualized and interactive process:

Students requesting Housing Accommodations will follow the College’s Interactive Process:

  1. Student Request via a form submission - addresses the student’s disability and requested accommodation. The required form is linked here:

https://warrenwilsoncollege.formstack.com/forms/housing_accommodations_student_request_form_and_guidelines

The required medical documentation form will be sent directly to the provider’s email address given on the student request form.

  1. Meeting and speaking with the student - about their disability and the barriers to access that the disability presents in their living and learning experience at the college.

  2. Reviewing the student’s medical documentation -the disability access review committee reviews all medical/health provider documentation to determine whether the student is eligible to receive a Housing Accommodation.

  3. Communication with the student regarding the review outcome.

Single Room Housing Accommodations:

There are a limited number of Housing Accommodation Single (occupancy) Rooms available for students with medical, psychological, psychiatric, mobility, visual or hearing impairment related conditions, whose conditions prohibit the student from living with a roommate.

Please note that providing the college with medical documentation does not guarantee a housing accommodation, and that the desire to have a quiet, undisturbed place to study, for example, is insufficient to warrant a single room housing accommodation.

Medical/Health Provider Documentation:

All disabilities related to the student’s Housing Accommodations Request must be documented on specific form by a licensed provider with expertise in the area of diagnosis and an ongoing treatment relationship with the student.  The required form will be sent directly to the provider’s email address that is given on the student request form.

Please note that providing the college with medical information does not guarantee housing accommodations.

Housing Accommodations Timelines and Deadlines

Student requests and medical/health provider documentation for housing accommodations are reviewed each academic year. Every student must submit a new student request and updated medical/health provider documentation within the appropriate cycle listed below. Because of the nature of the review process for these accommodations and the effects on broader College functions, deadlines are set to allow enough time for interaction, review and requests for additional information.

A recommendation from the Disability Access Review Committee for a Housing Accommodation is subject to renewal each academic year.
