Your Rights as a Research Participant

If you are a participant in a study through Warren Wilson College and have questions or concerns about your rights as a research participant you may contact the IRB Chairperson by email ([email protected]). Routine questions about scheduling, explanation of procedures, or similar matters about your particular study should be addressed to the research investigator named in your consent form.

Federal law requires that, usually, participants be given or read a statement, in everyday language, explaining:

• that you are about to participate in research,
• the purpose of the research,
• how long the study will take,
• what you will do during the study,
• if you are about to participate in any experimental procedures, and disclosure of appropriate alternative procedures or courses of treatment, if any, that might be advantageous to you,
• if you may experience any risks or discomforts,
• if you (or others) may experience any benefits from participating,
• the extent, if any, to which confidentiality of records identifying you will be maintained,
• for research involving more than minimal risk, an explanation as to whether any compensation or medical treatments are available if injury occurs and, if so, what they consist of, or where further information may be obtained.
• contact information for the Principal Investigator and the IRB
• that participation is voluntary and refusal to participate will involve no penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled,
• that you may stop participation at any time, without penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled.
• if there are any anticipated circumstances under which your participation may be terminated by the investigator,
• if participating will cost you anything,
• the approximate number of people involved in the study.
