What's the deal with voting in the primaries?

Primaries are elections that political parties use to select candidates for a general election. Then each party’s candidates run against each other in the general election. 

The Buncombe County Board of Elections has an Election Services page with everything you need to know about voting in the primaries. If you want to vote absentee, Turbovote will walk you through the process of registering in another state. 

Can I register to vote in North Carolina as a Warren Wilson out-of-state student?

Yes! As a student, you have valid residency at Warren Wilson College, and are able to use your dorm address on your registration in order to vote for in North Carolina in our districts. 


Can I still register with my home state or district

Yes! Just be sure to look up registration and absentee request deadlines for your state using Turbovote's How to Vote in Your State

What address should I use for my registration?

You should use your DORM ADDRESS for your residential address in your registration. If you use the Warren Wilson mailing address, your registration will be invalid. A list of dorm addresses is provided here: WWC Residence Hall Addresses.pdf

How do I know if I am already registered, what districts I am voting in, and where can I find a sample ballot?

Use the North Carolina voter lookup tool to find this out 

Registered out of state use this vote.orgs website or visit you state's board of election website.

When do I need to re-register?

You must re-register EVERY time you move addresses or change your name. This includes moving dorms. 

How do I re-register?

Simply register again. In section 8 of The North Carolina Registration Form there is a space to write down the last address you were registered to. Look that up here. You can register as many times as you like as long as your registration is received by the board of elections by

With early voting, you can do same-day voter registration if you miss the February voter registration deadline. You can vote early at any of the locations in Buncombe County established as an early voting polling place (WWC will send vans!). 

Where do I go if I want to vote on election day (March for the Primary Elections / November for the General Election)?

  • The WWC campus divide happens at the voting precinct level, which is determined by Buncombe County. You can look up your voting precinct based on the physical address of your residence hall here. The list of residence hall addresses is here

    • WWC dorms on central campus are voting precinct 66.1

      • The polling place on election day is the Bee Tree Fire Department

    • WWC dorms on the chapel/DeVries side of campus are voting precinct 65.1

      • Polling place on election day is WD Williams Elementary
